Homeschooling

The joy of home educating! For those who are called by God in this challenging task, I commend you for following God's call. I am one who will say that to educate my children at home has never been a dream of mine, or a deep desire. This answer to how our children would be educated came through much prayer and pleading with our Lord as to what he wanted us to do. I am not , or shall I saw We are not saying we are stressed out about it, but it is a challenge. My children are still very young, so our schedule is not so vigorous. If you think God is calling you to homeschool your children, here is a little bit of advice I received and I pass it on to you

  1. Don't panic!
  2. Read, Read, Read,
  3. Take your child's lead
  4. Talk to other parents who home educate their children
  5. Do not think home educating is "school at home"

When we first accepted God's calling for our family to be educated at home, all sorts of questions came through my mind, how can I do this when I barely made it through high school? Will they learn all they need to know? Will I forget some subject and will they end up all messed up and stupid all because I forgot a subject? Sure I know it sounds silly but I am sure 1 or some of the same questions have ran through your mind too. When we really pray and figure out what is important, it can bring us back to reality and bring us peace. To realize that our ultimate goal in our life is heaven. That is the prize. This is where we want to lead our children too. We want them to be Holy, disciplined, God fearing, obedient, children of God.... in other words.. SAINTS! This is not to say, you only teach your children about the bible and forget to teach Math, reading etc... I was so worried about this and as my children get older, I find they are the ones guiding me, instead of me them! It is amazing, our 5 year old daughter is already reading and we have not been doing anything "formal". When we do though, it is more like couch time. Children naturally want to learn, they are sponges. When our babies were born, & started to grow we taught them how to say Mama, Dada, please, thank you, how to get dressed, and the list goes on. I think we make a mistake when we think that all of a sudden the educating stops and off they go to school and we never see them till dinner time, and day in and day out, you never see your children. Educating at home has it's own lessons, and those who think it is an easy way out or that children are not "socialized" have no idea. In the "real world" how many of us are surrounded by a group of peers all the same age, all day long? When I use to work, it was not the case, actually I think I was the youngest person in the whole company! At public schools where I went, I was surrounded by all the same age group. I never liked school and struggled in areas that the teachers could not tend to because there were 20-30 other students who need her, and even then, you can never get that 1 on 1 time needed. Educating our children, lets us see where our children strength and weakness lies and we can help each other better than in a "school" setting. Who knows a child better than a mother and father?

Pray about it and follow God's lead. He will speak through your child, and help you in your sanctity & He will guide you and give you all you need if you are doing what you know or feel He is calling you to do. As our Holy Father has said, "Don't be afraid!"

Here are a few really good links to read up on homeschooling.

I highly recommend the 1st link if you want to get in touch with other like minded Catholic mothers home educating their children. Relax, and take it 1 year at a time. If God is calling you to this task you think is difficult, you will not be alone and He will be with you and help you, and provide where you are lacking! In the end we will see that God truly did help and that it was by His grace alone that your children get where they need to be. If we stay close to Jesus, He will not let us down... God bless!
